On Saturday before their game against the San Diego Padres, the Kansas City Royals held a press conference to announce the signing of Zion Rose, their first-round selection in the 2026 MLB Draft.
According to Anne Rogers, the Royals agreed to a $5,809,574 signing bonus. That was well under the slot amount of $7,746,100 for the sixth overall selection in this year's Draft.
Rose was seen as a mid-to-late first-round pick in this past MLB Draft. However, much of that was due to an injury that sidelined him at the beginning of the season. When healthy, was excellent on the field.
In 173 plate appearances, Rose hit .417 with a 147 wRC+. He had six home runs, scored 44 runs, collected 47 RBI, and stole 24 bases. He also showed strong contact ability with a meager 8.7% K% and a BB/K ratio of 1.27. Many in the organization feel that Rose could continue to develop as a hitter in the Royals system, and that he was one of the most polished hitters in the Draft after being selected No. 4. That included Brian Bridges, who spoke about Rose on the Royals Pipeline podcast on Friday.
With nearly $2 million saved, the Royals will likely use this amount to sign overslot selections like pitchers Taylor Rabe (No. 30 overall), Jack Slightom (No. 59 overall), and Hudson DeVaughan (No. 569 overall), as well as shortstop Camden Johnson (No. 269 overall).
Rose is the first signee to be made official by the Royals. We will be keeping a tracker of Royals Draft Picks and how much they sign for at our Draft Tracker on Royals Keep.
MLB teams have until July 27th to sign all their Draft picks. Those who go unsigned can return to or attend college, or play in Independent League baseball.
