  1. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of the Royals' 2026-2027 offseason schedule, highlighting essential dates for the Winter Meetings, MLB Draft Lottery, and key decision-making periods for arbitration-eligible players and those with team or mutual contract options. The Royals enter the 2026–2027 offseason looking to improve the supporting cast around Bobby Witt Jr. and turn a difficult season into a stronger foundation for 2027. Outfield production, pitching depth, contract options, and decisions involving younger players will shape the winter. This guide covers free agency, roster deadlines, awards, the Winter Meetings, and the scheduled return of baseball to Kauffman Stadium. Calendar note: MLB’s current collective bargaining agreement expires December 1, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern. A lockout is anticipated but has not begun. Baseball events and operations that could be affected are marked “pending lockout.” Published dates remain listed unless officially changed. Important Dates at a Glance Day after the World Series ends: Eligible Royals become free agents; offseason trades resume under the current agreement. Fifth day after the World Series ends: Exclusive negotiating period ends; eligible free agents can sign with other clubs. Qualifying offers are due. Individual contract-option deadlines must also be checked. November 1, 2026: Gold Glove Award winners announced. November 2: BBWAA award finalists and Silver Slugger finalists announced. November 9–12: General Manager Meetings in Las Vegas. November 9: Rookie of the Year winners announced. November 10: Manager of the Year winners announced. November 11: Cy Young Award winners announced; MLB Awards celebration in Las Vegas. November 12: Most Valuable Player Award winners announced. November 17: Rule 5 roster protection deadline; qualifying-offer acceptance deadline; Silver Slugger winners announced. November 20: Non-tender deadline. December 1, 10:59 p.m. Central: Current collective bargaining agreement expires. December 2026: Winter Meetings — pending lockout. December 7–9 is the reported baseball-business schedule; published calendars differ on the full meeting window. December 8: Scheduled MLB Draft Lottery — pending lockout. December 9: Scheduled Major League Rule 5 Draft — pending lockout. January 8, 2027: Scheduled salary arbitration figure exchange — pending lockout. January 15: Expected international signing period opening under the existing system — pending lockout. Late January–February: Expected arbitration hearings — pending lockout. February: Pitchers, catchers, and position players report to Surprise; exact dates unannounced — pending lockout. February 19: Scheduled Cactus League opener against Texas at Surprise Stadium — pending lockout. March: Spring Breakout details unannounced — pending lockout. March 24: Scheduled MLB Opening Night; matchup unannounced — pending lockout. March 25: Scheduled Royals Opening Day and home opener against Minnesota at Kauffman Stadium — pending lockout. Free Agency: Who Could Leave Kansas City? The Royals’ pending free-agent group includes: INF Jonathan India. RHP Craig Kimbrel. INF Josh Rojas. C Luke Maile. Carlos Estévez and Tony Gonsolin could join that group depending on their club-option decisions. Several familiar names are no longer Kansas City free-agent decisions. Kris Bubic, Lane Thomas, Starling Marte, Matt Strahm, and John Schreiber departed during the season. Their contracts should not be counted as pending departures from the current Royals roster. Kansas City’s winter will depend on how it fills openings while creating opportunities for younger players. Improving the lineup without weakening an already challenged pitching staff is a central task. View our top free agents ranking by clicking here. Contract Options Carlos Estévez: $13 million club option, with a $2 million buyout. Tony Gonsolin: $2.5 million club option. These are pending decisions, not completed transactions. Declining an option would allow the player to reach free agency, although the Royals could still negotiate a new agreement. Qualifying Offers The reported qualifying offer is $23.15 million for one season, according to the New York Post. Offers are due on the fifth day after the World Series, with the reported acceptance deadline on November 17. Kansas City must evaluate both eligibility and value before extending an offer. Under the current rules, players cannot receive a second qualifying offer, and players acquired during the season cannot receive one from their new club. The system also affects outside additions. Pursuing a free agent who rejected an offer can carry draft and international signing consequences under the applicable rules. No potential Royals offer should be described as official before the club announces it. General Manager Meetings: November 9–12 The GM Meetings take place in Las Vegas from November 9–12. For Kansas City, the meetings provide an early opportunity to discuss offensive upgrades, assess the market for pitching, and explore trades that could address roster overlap. The approaching expiration of the labor agreement could encourage earlier negotiations and deals, although it does not guarantee a rush of completed deals. Rule 5 Protection and the 40-Man Roster Protection deadline: November 17. Scheduled Major League Rule 5 Draft: December 9 — pending lockout. Outfielder Gavin Cross is among the prospects whose protection status merits attention. His opportunity to contribute in Kansas City intersects with the club’s broader outfield evaluation. The Royals must also accommodate players returning from the 60-day injured list and preserve room for outside additions. Protecting prospects can require moving other players off the roster. Being eligible for protection does not mean an addition has been announced. The November deadline comes before the labor agreement expires; the December draft remains pending lockout. Awards Season November’s awards recognize defense, offense, pitching, and overall performance. The MLB Awards celebration is separate from the individual BBWAA announcements. For Royals fans, the calendar provides another opportunity to follow recognition for the club’s leading players. Finalists, voting finishes, and winners will become official on the announcement dates listed above. Non-Tenders and Arbitration Non-tender deadline: November 20. Scheduled figure exchange: January 8 — pending lockout. Expected hearings: late January–February — pending lockout. The reported Royals arbitration group includes: Kyle Isbel Nate Pearson Nick Mears Alex Lange Daniel Lynch IV Michael Massey Anthony Gose James McArthur Randy Dobnak Lucas Erceg Alec Marsh Tendering a contract retains a player’s rights; it does not establish his final salary. Projections remain estimates until the sides agree or an arbitration panel issues a decision. Kansas City must weigh salary, health, roster flexibility, and the availability of replacements when deciding which players to retain. Winter Meetings, Draft Lottery, and Competitive Balance Picks Winter Meetings: December — pending lockout. Scheduled Draft Lottery: December 8 — pending lockout. Scheduled Major League Rule 5 Draft: December 9 — pending lockout. The Royals’ final draft position, any Competitive Balance selection, compensation adjustments, and associated bonus allocations remain subject to official confirmation. A possible work stoppage should not be described as an official cancellation of these events. Hall of Fame Voting: The Royals Connection Wade Davis is among the potential first-year candidates for the 2027 ballot, giving Royals fans a direct connection to the club’s championship era. Official ballot inclusion and election results will determine the final field. January 19 has been reported as the results date; Hall of Fame voting operates separately from MLB roster business. International Signing Period Expected opening: January 15, 2027 — pending lockout. Kansas City’s official international bonus pool and completed signings will depend on the applicable agreement and league announcements. Reported commitments remain separate from completed contracts. Spring Training in Surprise Reporting dates: pending lockout. The Royals are scheduled to begin Cactus League play February 19 against the Rangers at Surprise Stadium — pending lockout. The facility will celebrate its 25th spring-training season. Spring Training will clarify outfield opportunities, pitching health, and the roles available to young players pushing toward Kansas City. Opening Day at Kauffman Stadium The Royals are scheduled to open at home against the Minnesota Twins on March 25 — pending lockout. First-pitch time and broadcast information remain subject to announcement. Kansas City’s offseason will be measured by the improvements around its established core and the opportunities it creates for the next group of contributors.
